Misdiagnosis and Diagnostic Overshadowing

Misconception and bias notably impact whether people with disability feel included and cared for but they can also have serious health implications. This is particularly relevant for people with intellectual disability or mental illness who may experience diagnostic overshadowing.

Diagnostic overshadowing occurs when the physical signs and symptoms displayed by a person with mental ill health or disability are incorrectly interpreted and attributed to their condition, leading to delayed diagnosis and/or treatment (Ali et al. 2013).

First, let's learn from Zander and Dani as they reflect on their experiences of misdiagnosis in the hospital setting.
